How To Lose Belly Fat

When we get to a certain age our once flat firm abdomen appears to have vacated leaving behind belly fat.  How did this happen? And more importantly how are we going to get rid of it?  Millions of dollars are spent every year on that question alone in the search for the Holy Grail of reducing stomach fat.  From diet plans, to exercise DVD’s to surgery the decision is difficult to determine which treatment will do the trick?

First we need to address how the belly fat got there.  While the obvious answers are poor diet and lack of exercise, we must also consider certain other lifestyles.  Lack of sleep, alcohol consumption and stress can also attribute to that spare tire that appeared when we weren’t looking.   And to add insult to injury, recent studies have shown that abdominal fat can lead to an increased risk in developing diabetes, heart disease and perhaps even certain types of cancer.   So the question again is: How do we make it go away?

Unfortunately there is no miracle pill or cure to eliminate the unwanted fat around our middle.  The best tried and true methods for abdominal fat reduction are some lifestyle modifications along with a healthy diet and exercise.   The lifestyle modifications include getting an adequate amount of sleep, limiting alcohol intake and managing stress levels.

Eliminating processed foods and eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meat is the first step toward a healthy diet.  The next step is to incorporate both aerobic activity and resistant weight training into an exercise program.  This will burn calories not only while the exercise is taking place, but will continue to burn fat and calories throughout the day.  Although exercises are available that target the abdomen specifically, an overall exercise program tends to be more beneficial for overall health and body fat reduction.

Still need to remove the belly fat even after all that healthy food and exercise?  Surgical and non surgical treatments are available to assist in the reduction of the unwanted fat.  Surgical procedures include liposuction and tummy tucks.  Liposuction, either traditional or laser assisted, is specifically designed to remove fat from target areas.  The fat is liquefied and suctioned out through a vacuum system.  Tummy tucks however, while appearing to eliminate or reduce abdominal fat, work more with the abdominal muscle wall to tighten the area.  Belly fat can also be reduced through mesotherapy and some cellulite reduction therapy machines.  With both treatments the fat is flushed out of the body through vascular and lymphatic drainage.
