VASER® LipoSelection is a specialized method for of the number one cosmetic procedure, liposuction. Fat particles are melted and then easily removed by combining ultrasound energy and the motion and suction of traditional liposuction. VASER® liposuction will gently re-contour specific areas of the body such as the abdomen, arms, back, hips, thighs, knees, neck and chin by breaking up, liquefying and removing the fat. Sound Surgical Technologies LLC launched its first system in March 2001. Since then they have again received FDA approval for this third generation VASER® LipoSelection system. An acronym that stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, VASER® works with sound waves to emulsify fat with minimal tissue trauma during the process. VASER® is less harsh than the traditional techniques due to the wand like tubes (cannulas) that are smaller in diameter. The small cannulas allow for easier removal of the liquefied fat from directly beneath the skin and leave the surrounding tissues (nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue) mostly undisturbed. In addition to being able to remove the tissue from beneath the skin surface, with the high definition version of the VASER® the surgeon is also able to trace the natural contours of the muscles of the body. Underlying muscles become visibly more defined and enhanced with this technique, offering a look often only seen in very fit men and women. Optimal candidates are those who have excess body fat in specific areas, but otherwise have a stable body weight. They should have good muscle tone, no excess fat or excess skin, are close to their ideal weight and work out at least 3 times per week. VASER® Hi-def is ideal for those who are more interested in sculpting the body and not just de-bulking the fat of traditional liposuction. VASER® is exceptional for treating large and small areas of fat and particularly difficult to treat areas, such as chin and upper arms. The isolated pockets of fat that respond best to this type of liposuction are often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
How does it work? Ultrasonic probes set off high frequency vibrations which initiate the fat cells to break apart and liquefy. This alters the tissue and also promotes skin contraction with minimal irritation to the surrounding tissues. An immediate difference is reported by many patients, with optimal results presenting 3-6 months later.
As with any surgical procedure there are possible associated side effects or complications. Heat created during the procedure will increase the risk of a burn, blisters and scarring.
